TWICE DEPORTED, R.I MAN INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL RE-ENTRY TO U.S.

                                                                                            PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Armando Lastor-Canil, 34, of Providence, R.I., an alien who was previously convicted of a felony, and twice deported from the United States, was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for re-entering the country without the express consent of the Attorney General of the United States to reapply for admission to the United States.
           Lastor-Canil is a native and citizen of Guatemala who illegally entered the United States in February 1991. He was deported on September 28, 1995 from Houston, Texas, pursuant to an Immigration Court order. The defendant returned and was again deported from Miami, Florida, on May 15, 2001.
            It came to the attention of the Rhode Island Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office that Lastor-Canil was back in the United States, being held in the ACI on a state charge.  ICE lodged a detainer, and when Lastor-Canil was released from the ACI on February 27, 2010 he was arrested and detained by ICE.
            The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha. An indictment is merely an allegation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
            If convicted, the defendant faces penalties of up to 20 years imprisonment; 5 years supervised release; and, a $250,000 fine.
            The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Zechariah Chafee. .
